Project Geekchild

As some of us may have already, I have offspring. Three beautiful girls to be exact. Being mine, they have been exposed to a large variety of tech and general geekyness. Thus ‘Project Geekchild’ was born. But to find the right candidate. The one kid to embody all my geek legacy to. I mean who’ll upgrade the linux servers at home once I’m gone?
Well, the good thing is each has a enough conditioning that they could be excellent candidates. I started early with the oldest. Unfortunately she’ll be more the graphic designer or artist than server monkey. Next up was my middle one, yeah, attempted to teach programming and she had no interest. Well, before I could devise my next plan of attack on the third and youngest candidate she actually came to me with questions about computers and lots of them.
So, how do you carefully mold a potential prodigy? In this case in a week I’ll take apart an old PC that has been collecting dust, clean it out and leave the parts on the table. Then without touching a thing I’ll guide her to installing everything from the power supply to the main board to the video card. And then we’ll turn it on. I tried this with my oldest and she loved it, just didn’t show as much interest afterward.
If we have more time afterward, I’ll even have her install an OS. Which OS, I’m not sure but I will definitely format the disks with Gparted to make sure she can’t cheat.
I’ll post later to let you know if it booted or needed the fire extinguisher.
